I always keep a simple hilt in the forge alongside my custom work, both for efficient use of the hot forge, and also because the to-and-fro is about right for the timing of forging heats.

It is a similar affair for cold chiselling and engraving, having a trial piece alongside my custom work allows me to fine-tune the gravers and my posture before cutting into the big project.
