This fencing hanger represents a common class of cut-and-thrust sword from the 17th-18th century. Lightweight with a central pivot, it is a swift sword with strong presence that excels in the cut.
The thumb ring provides excellent control in extended guards, but also accommodates a slipped thumb, allowing for rotational close-measure moves familiar to Highland broadsword styles. Meanwhile the simple guard allows for a sabre-style extended handshake grip.
Simple and versatile, this sword is efficient yet elegant, based on an antique with ropework carvings across the bars of the guard, and the spiralling motif continued on the pommel. The grip is wrapped in linen thread and covered in oxblood-red kidskin.
